QUICKTIME 03
MK1 - Animatic for the Radiohead "In Rainbows" video contest at www.aniboom.com. This piece was created using Maya. The sky is a dynamic Fluid Container. The stars are a particle system with instanced geometry. I wanted the sky to swirl around the stars, but instances cannot be collision objects in fluid containers - the workaround was to use carefully placed "invisible geometry". I could have converted the instances into actual geometry using the excellent mel script ("Alien Replacer") by Nicola Danese that can be downloaded at his website (www.nicoladanese.com) or highend3d. I will probably do that for the final version when I add more stars, but I wanted the render time to be as fast as possible so I wouldn't risk missing the submission deadline. The Earth and Moon are shattered rigid bodies with an animated procedural fire shader. In the final version the Earth will have an atmosphere that is evaporated as it approaches the Sun and the shader will be replaced by a fire particle system. The Sun is a sphere with an animated Perlin noise procedural texture. In the final version, I will add a volume fog sphere for "light rays" as well as solar flares created using 2d fluid containers animated with a volume axis field. The nebula at the end is currently an image map animated using a fluid container which will be replaced with a nebula created using the procedural textures in the fluid container - the small nodules at the center will be an animated particle system inside the container. I had hoped to include them in the animatic, but the animation wasn't quite polished enough so I decided not to use the test renders as I think they would have just been distracting.
